Tech North is a Government Quango and part of Tech City UK. Their mission is to ensure the Northern tech communities have the information, networks, support and inspiration they need to further the growth and success seen in recent years. Whilst also ensuring the wider world knows about the entrepreneurs, companies, innovators and change agents that are reshaping the modern Northern economy through tech and digital media.
In September 2015 we were approached by Tech North to document their Northern Stars competition, a series of 6 events across 6 different cities in the North of England culminating in a grand final event in Manchester in December. These events would include live speakers / pitches, vox pop interviews and GVs of each city / space. Following the success of the initial events we were then asked to document the winners stories across a further 3 events including Tech Crunch Disrupt London, a pitch at Bloomberg London and travelling to the SXSW Festival in Texas. Finally we created a series of profile videos of each company and their stories across the 6 month program - "Northern Stars Stories" series.
The footage would be edited for highlights videos on YouTube, social edits for Twitter / Instagram, pitch training for delegates and as archive for future edits and promotional videos. As Tech North is a Government Quango getting the most out of budgets was imperative therefore we operated a skeleton crew with a simple but effective style of videography using multiple cameras on tripods to cover the action and shooting interviews at 4K where possible in order to get 2 shots out of one camera. We also offered where possible to capture stills further increasing our value proposition.
With such a wide brief, travel and a range of different venues, some well lit some not the choice of equipment for each event was incredibly important. We used a mixture of Sony A7S, Sony FS7, Sony PMW200 and Sony EX1 cameras along with lighting from Arri 650w Fresnels and our new V-Lok powered Rosco Litepad Vectors.
Throughout the production we were required to be multi-skilled both shooting and producing with limited crew. We worked closely along side the Tech North marketing team pre-production to ensure we had a shared vision of the story we were aiming to put across.
